Book Woes: Reading Less

On the move again…seems I spend a lot of time in the car driving from one job or errand to the next!

As I often proclaim, I am a multi-book reader.  What does that mean?  It means I like to read multiple books during the same period of time.  I always have a book in my purse, a book (or two) by my bed, and another on my desk.  When selecting which books to read I normally select different genres so that the stories don’t get all mixed up in my head, LOL, yes that does happen to me. 😉  To keep the stories separate, I tend to pick a fiction book, a Star Trek book, and either a biography or a devotional book.

This arrangement has fared well with my reading habits, but lately I have not been able to finish a book I have started because my reading time has been cut drastically!  I’m working two jobs and volunteering my time with the Youth in my community and this has almost nullified my reading time.  I try to read on my breaks at work, but with a half hour it doesn’t really cut it.  I begin to get into the story and then have to stop because my time is up…very frustrating.  I’ve also tried to read before going to bed, but I’m too tired by then and find I can only read a few pages before my eyes start to blur and flutter.

So, due to these life changes, I have decided to read *gasp* one book at a time.  Yes, I’m bummed about this, but I think it’s the only way I can read a book in a reasonable timespan.  Right now I have been reading three books for over two months!  Very ridiculous!  And since I’m reading them so slowly, I feel like I’m not emerging myself in the story and, therefore, I think I’m missing out on the enjoyment of reading.

In this fast paced world, I am sad that reading is the part of my life that is getting cut.  I have so many TBR (to be read) books piled high on my shelf and knowing that my reading time has been cut is heart breaking.  I am in need of a few suggestions on how to balance life, family, work, and my longing to read…

I know life is constantly changing and that gives me hope!  But for now I think I’m going to try reading one book at a time.

  1. I’ve been a multi-book reader since I learned to read (I’m 33). I’ve run into the same issues as you recently – work is crazy, or I have to do a grocery run, or volunteer…or whatever! I’m fortunate in having a lunch hour, but it’s a cube farm so reading can feel a little strange. I’ve forced myself to try a half hour before bed. Currently I’ve got a duology by N.K. Jemisin (so good), a gardening book for “people on the go” and a money book. Good luck!

    • Thanks! Yeah, life can get busy. I’m trying to read before bed too, but sometimes reading keeps me awake because I want to read more – you know the “just one more chapter” syndrome! 😉
I’ve never heard of N.K. Jemisin…think I’ll Google him to find out more. Okay, just Googled and realized it’s a her. LOL
